44 Pounds: How to Pack for the Amazon

Description

Weight limits are strictly enforced in the Amazon aviation world and for good reason. Learn how to pack what you need and not do without. A few tips could leave room for a trip to the duty free shop in
Many, but not all trips down to the Amazon make use of a float plane. These are mostly Cessna Caravans on amphibious floats. They can land on water or land and carry eight people plus luggage. As a result, most angling destinations are limited to eight people for no other reason than that is all the plane will hold.

Luggage: You will be limited to 44 pounds, not kilos, for all of them including your rod tube and carry on. 44 pounds-no exceptions. With the airplane maxed out, the amount of luggage becomes critical and rest assured your bags will be weighed, all of them. If you are over the 44 pound limit you will have the option of removing items until you reach the 44 pounds limit and those items removed will stay behind.

With that said most people have no problem staying under the radar. Here are a few ways to stay under the 44 pound limit.

1. Be realistic. Four pairs of boots? AM/FM radio? Case of beer? I have seen them all.... left behind!

2. Pack with a buddy it will save you countless pounds. One rod tube for the two of you. One bottle of aloe Vera, sun screen and shampoo instead of two. Take two extra rods and reels for the two of you instead of two per person.

3. Start with a travel bag that weighs very little. Some of these larger bags weigh 14
empty! Try and stay away from canvas as it is heavy and does a poor job of repelling water. A Nylon duffel bag is about the best.

4. Stick to the packing list. The list used by WWA has been refined down to the ounce. It will have listed out just what you need, in the quantity you will need and nothing more. Thinking about bringing some soft baits? Is it on the list? Then don't bring it. (Soft baits are more commonly called Piranha candy.)

5. The most problematic article of clothing to decide upon is footwear. I have tried everything. I have come to the conclusion that the best combination is a pair of
nylon tennis shoes and a pair of sandals. I ware the shoes on the plane and as such does not count against my 44 pounds and the sandals weight next to nothing. In the boat I ware socks in my tennis shoes. If they get wet while out fishing then I ware the sandals that night as the tennis shoes dry out. If your destination involves spending every night moored on a sandy beach then you will want to substitute a pair of flip flops for your sandals. This is because you will want to leave them at the door when ever you step off the beach.

6.Change your perspective. Hardback books are great. In the Amazon, paperback is better. Lead weights for catfish on a Peacock Bass trip? Bottle of Scotch in a glass bottle? (Pour it in a plastic and note the difference in weight.)

7. Loose the tackle box. Get a deep Plano plastic box as well as a shallow one and you will be glad you did.

8. Let your airline carry on bag be your boat bag and remember the regularly scheduled 3 o'clock thunder storm when choosing a carry on/boat bag.

Because of the 44 pound limit all of the destinations subject to this limit will wash and iron your clothes on a daily basis. Creases in your underwear!

In the end all of this adds up to safety.
